You don’t want rats in your house; our native birds don’t want rats in their nests. If you join the Protect The Bluff backyard trapping initiative, you can help BHMET help you to control rat numbers in your garden. For a small koha, we can provide you with a pet- and child-safe trap to place in your backyard.
If you bait the trap with peanut butter, rats will be cleanly killed. All you need to do is remove the board from the trap box, hold the board over your bin and open the trap. That’s it - one less rat!
Over 1,000 rats have been killed in Bluff since the programme started just four years ago. We have a little suspicion that if all the traps had been regularly baited (ideally once a week, at a stretch, once a month), we’d probably have seen closer to 5,000 rats killed.
It makes a difference! As rodent numbers fall on the hill and in the town, more birdsong is coming into backyards. As birds see successful breeding seasons, things will only get better.
